What’s The Best Age To Start Learning To Play The Violin?

Teach Yourself Violin

There are a lot of different instruments that one can learn. Obviously most parents want to give their child the best possible start in life and thet involves making sure they get the opportunity to try a variety of things to see where their natural talents lie. The violin is a very popular instruments these days and one that most children are very eager to learn. There are some parents who are just not sure whether violin lessons for children are going to be right for the age of their child.

Well there are a few things to think about. To figure out whether violin lessons for children are a wise choice one of the most important questions to answer is whether the child is old enough to stay focused and not get bored going through with their lessons. If the child is not going to be able to stay focused enough then there is no point in trying to make them sit through lessons like this. If the child is not able to follow a structured plan and seems to get bored easily, it may not be the right time for them to learn something like this.

Also these lessons don't come cheap. The child may be more than ready to get started with violin lessons for children but if the parent doesn’t have the money to buy the violin, strings and other resources needed then there is really no point in getting the child all excited for something they can’t afford. While there are no substantial costs involved here it can definitely add up with the violin, strings, accessories and lessons. Renting the instrument is another option that parents have.

Another important question that parents should ask themselves when trying to decide on violin lessons for children is whether they think that this is something their child would be ready to spend a great deal of time doing. A lot of parents end up forcing skills like this onto their child when it is really not of interest to their child at all. The most important thing is that the child is going to have fun learning this new skill and becoming talented at playing the violin. If they are not having any fun then there is really no point to it all.

If a parent does decide that they want to sign their kid up for violin lessons then it is just going to be a matter of looking around at a few different places and seeing what prices they are charging for lessons.

The best option is to hire an instructor who is going to come right into the home to give private violin lessons for children. While children are learning their new skill this will mean that they will be comfortable and it will save some time. This advice will be useful for parents who are debating whether to let their children should have violin tuition.

Violins have featured prominently in many small town and farm festivals as being one of the instruments used during the town dance.  Violins are also largely used in a grand orchestra, often playing classical music pieces to the affluent and upper crust of society.  The versatility of the violin is primarily seen in the musical genres wherein it is used.  Most often, violins are seen being used alongside a host of other instruments in an orchestra, where the enduring strains of the violin lend a lofty sound to the body of the harmony.

Violins were also introduced into the eclectic world of jazz in the 1920s, generating an off-beat sound that lent a playful tone to otherwise somber jazz tunes.  The 1960s saw a growing number of violin players lending their music to popular songs being recorded and played during the era, thus officially ushering the violin into pop world.

A look back in history, however, will show that the violin is the embodiment of classical music, since it shows up a lot in historical accounts, as well as in folk songs that are handed down from generation to generation.  The romance and allure of the music that comes from the violin has been an undeniable part of musical history throughout the ages, and continues to be a preferred instrument for many, as evidenced by the creation of the electronic violin, made to compliment modern electronic instruments.

Many would like to learn how to play the violin because, of all the instruments, it comes off as one of the most convenient, as it is quite easy to transport, being quite compact compared to other instruments.  The violin has enough acoustics produced by its own body to produce ample sound to fill an average sized auditorium even without pick-up sound system.  Perhaps one of the most common reasons why many people want to learn how to play the violin is the fact that it is considered the height of class and breeding when one knows how to play the classics on a violin.

Once you have the posture set, then start plucking the strings with your fingers, so you will know just how they should sound. As the sound of the strings becomes ingrained in your mind, you will want to add the sound of the bow as it resonates against each string. Through these simple exercises, you will immediately begin to feel the music within you want to come out. It is now time to get serious about your lessons!

How To Play The Violin

Learning how to play the violin takes time, patience and skill. As a musician myself and having spent 3 long years at The Royal Scottish Academy Of Music I understand a thing or 2 about learning instruments.

Right across the board of learning to play any instrument or in fact learning any subject or skill, there is one common factor. It rears it’s head at every possible opportunity.

Repetition. Repetition is the mother of all learning. Let me say it again ‘repetition’.

But I will keep this article focused on just the violin. Thus, there are a few things that you need to know as you begin to study the musical instrument:

  1. First up you have to go and find a good teacher. Don’t be afraid to phone and speak to them first. You want to get to know them and this helps you decide if they are suitable for you too.
  2. You will need a basic but good instrument. All to often people buy the cheapest instrument and this may not be your best option to take. A bad instrument can prevent you from progress. Hunt out someone that can give you some good advice by going to a violin specialist shop or retailer. You don’t have to spend a fortune or get something from a violin maker themselves but prhaps start with a good Suzuki model – very popular among beginners.
  3. Ok this is the biggest tip I can give you for learning how to play the violin. Develop and stick to a good practice routine. Without this your progress will be none exsistant or at best, slow. By putting in good, focused practice you will learn quickly, read music well, have a great technique and you will enjoy it much, much more compared to not practising.

When it comes to developing a practice routine you are going to have to be a little disciplined. Your teacher will be able to help you with what you should work on each day, but here are a few tips that I use and give to my students:

  • Aim to practice daily.
  • Little and often is better than a marathon work session at the weekend
  • Don’t forget to warm up, this is part of your practice and could be done with some simple scales.
  • Include exercises and pure technique work regularly.
  • Work on 2 or 3 pieces so you don’t get bored of just the one.
  • Do some practice without your instrument. This could be learning to read your music quickly and fluently. Or perhaps clapping and counting some rhythm passages.

If you are looking at playing the violin remember to find a good teacher that you are going to gel with. Otherwise you could be throwing your money down the drain. Lessons are not cheap after all.

If you DO NOT practice you will not progress, regardless if you are learning from Paganini himself! Develop a strong work ethic and your progress should remain consistant and rapid. It is an absolute must to learning anything. I can’t remember where I heard this but its a great phrase – “Repetition is the mother of all learning”.

  1. Aim to practice on a daily basis.
  2. Little and often is always better than rare, marathon runs!
  3. Set immovable times that are allocated to practice.
  4. Divide your practice time up into sections like: warm up, scales, pieces, exercises and finish with improvisation for example. This helps you remain focused and interested.
  5. Set some goals. This could be to learn music x by date x.

Many people find learning an instrument to often be a lonely task. So as you learn to play the violin perhaps get together with other violinists or musicians to play, talk, swap techniques and music. Interaction with other players can help you progress very well.

To some people, especially when first beginning to play, this can seem like a very intimidating thing to do. However I have always found musicians to be very patient and they love helping out the ‘newbie’. I think this is because all players were beginners once and they know exactly how it feels.

If you’re not ready for that step just yet, then again this is where the online approach is great.

The program Violin Master Pro allows you to play along with what are called ‘Jam Tracks’. They are musical pieces that play through your computer and allow you to play or jam along in the privacy of your own home. Problem solved.

If you are serious and want to learn to play the violin, make sure you develop a good practice routine and be certain to take a look at the online option.

Learn To Play Violin – Start On The Right Track

Of all of the instruments in the orchestra, the violin is one of the most versatile and admired of all musical instruments. There is hardly any classical score which does not include the violin, which is why its presence is always noticed in most musical plays, background movie tracks, and classical compositions.  Along with the piano, the music made from playing the violin is often thought to be among the most romantic.

A violin, one of the two more popular members of the string instrument family, produces unique music that practically no other instrument can emulate, allowing it to have a “signature” of sorts when being played.  This is why master violin players are said to be able to leave their distinctive “signature” after playing a selection on their violin.  The remarkable thing about the violin is that it can play the entire spectrum of social events – from the usual gala performance for the social elite to the barn dances and square dancing in social halls everywhere. Many people want to learn to play the violin for this reason alone.

One of the best choices that anyone can make is to decide to learn to play the violin.  With most people so focused on making money and advancing in their careers, there is precious little time left for enjoyable pastimes such as appreciation of the arts.

When a potential student wants to learn to play the violin, it is important to have their own violin with which to practice. This is vital since learning while in session with the instructor is just the beginning. As with any discipline that requires concentration, focus, and a lot of practice, it is best when violin lessons are supplemented with habitual practice between class sessions. This practice allows for better recollection and command of the art, thereby ensuring that all lessons are not only committed to theoretical and rote memory, but also to muscle memory, which makes playing seem like second nature.

In addition to choosing a reliable instrument with which to practice, a pupil who wants to learn to play violin should take care to choose the best tutor, learning institution or study course in order to ensure that they have the opportunity to learn all aspects of playing the violin.
