Subliminal Songs Exposed
Any search online will bring up a multitude of subliminal songs. i.e. songs with subliminal suggestions in them.
You can find anything; ranging from classics like Led Zeppelin stairway to heaven hidden messages to the modern era with artists such as Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Justin Timberlake using subliminal encoding.
There is quite a strong debate whether artists intentionally put subliminal messages in their music or not. Most musicians straight out deny using them. However after listening to some of these songs in reverse there are some really obvious subliminal messages which which are audible. Messages which are just clear to be just a coincidence.
The craze for recording / finding subliminal messages in songs started way back in 1967 with the release of Led Zeppelins track “Stairway to Heaven” Within this video there were alleged to be subliminal messages around the chorus section where the line starts “so there's a bushell in your hedgerow”. People played the track backwards to reveal a suggestion of “Here's to my Sweet Satan”. This caused public outcry, and condemnation from the church – of course Led Zep denied everything.
But the denial was irrelevant, phenomenon of subliminal backmasking in songs was created!
People started looking for messages, while more artists started putting them in their music. Subliminals have since been found in:
Britney Spears – telling people “sleep with me I’m not too young” in her first single.
Nirvana – saying “I hate you” in Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Tupac – claiming to be still alive.
Queen – suggesting that you try smoking Cannibis.
Lady Gaga – telling people to “have sex” in her first single “just dance”.
This is just the start, musicians have been putting subliminals in their music for over 40 years! There are hundreds of examples spanning all genres, and most of the big named popstars! Are There Really Subliminal Messages in Stairway To Heaven
Led Zeppelin's rock song “Stairway to Heaven” is one of the most controversial songs for its hidden verses – it is alleged a backmasked message is present in "Stairway to Heaven"." It happens in the middle part of the song: “If there's a bustle in your hedgerow….”.
A backmasked message means one that is hidden beyond the perception of regular consciousness – i.e. a subliminal message – so when you play the verse backwards you hear different words. Here is the stairway to heaven subliminal verse in full:
- Oh here’s to my sweet Satan.
- The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan.
- He will give those with him 666.
- There was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad Satan.
The controversy all started when a Baptist preacher blasted the song on his radio show in 1982.
This brought on lots ofcontroversy and several people analyzed the song including the Consumer Protection and Toxic Materials Committee. William Yarroll, a self-identified neuroscientist, also supported the theory that the song contained messages when played in reverse.
Led Zep blanked the critics for a while - only ever releasing the statement "Our turntables only play in one direction—forwards". Sound engineer Eddie Kramer got angry at the critisicm, calling the claims "totally and utterly ridiculous". Why would they spend studio time doing something so dumb?" Led Zep Writer Robert Plant also got angry with all the accusations: "To me it's very sad, because it was written with good intentions, and as for reversing the music and putting messages in, that isn't my idea of making music.
