As a Christian musician, I find it particularly reassuring and inspiring that the Bible talks about music! So, even several millenia ago musicians had official leadership roles. Creativity was respected. In fact, musicians were important members of the military, preceding the warriors onto the battlefield playing their instruments. Of course, in the Psalms, multitudes of verses refer to music – various instruments, jubilant singing, praise, birds joining song with flutes and lyres, cymbals symbolizing the Lord’s thundering voice. But in the Bible, we find a great example of healing Christian music which brought relief to a king who was tortured by an evil spirit. What can we learn from this example from thousands of years ago of the healing effect of music on the soul?

There is a classical music piece entitled “The Little Shepherd,” published in 1908 by Claude Debussey. The visual my teacher painted for me while I was practicing it, was to picture a young shepherd alone on a hill, overlooking his sheep playing this rather sad melody on his flute. The sounds crescendo and diminuendo with interesting trills and unordinary rhythms. I always pictured him as King David, the great psalmist of the Bible, as a little boy watching his father’s herds. I wonder how many hours a day he played music in the fields? Did he carry a quill pen with him to pen the psalms? Were his songs an extension of him speaking to Father God? Was the music a prayer rising from his heart, expressing a range of emotion in the purest form he could?

If the answer to these questions is “yes,” then I can understand. All human emotions have found voice through music; I have experienced] a plethora of them sitting in front of my piano. The one I treasure the most, however, is when the notes become a prayer directly to God in His throne room.

Speaking of throne rooms, look at 1 Samuel 16:14-23. Before he become King, David’s days of playing harp in the fields were interrupted by orders play music for King Saul. His royal duty? To soothe the King Saul’s foul moods.

Saul has disobeyed the Lord and therefore been rejected as King.(1 Samuel 15) Little did Saul know, the prophet Samuel, under the Lord’s direction, had already anointed David the shepherd boy to be the next king of Israel. (1 Samuel 16:1-13) Evidently David was a gifted musicial since that skill gained him a job in the King’s court. He was also touted as a well-spoken and brave warrior, which David would prove later in his life. His healing music, however, is what first gave him entrance with the king.

Because King Saul had disobeyed the Lord, God had rejected him as king. The Lord removed his Spirit from Saul, and in fact, sent an evil spirit to torment him. Worried, Saul’s servants decied to find a musician who could play well and make Saul feel better. (1 Samuel 16:15-17) David was recommended and eventually brought into full time service to the king. (1 Samuel 16:18-22) David would play music when the evil spirit tormented Saul and Saul would find relief.

Haven’t we all experienced times of anguish, grief, anger, fear, worry and decided to play a favorite song (either on a CD or with an instrument) and soon began to let go? What is it about music that affects us in this way? Why is it that music has healing power?

The healing power in the music referenced in this scripture passage originates from the fact that the Spirit of God rested upon David. (1 Samuel 16:13) What an vital truth for any Christian musician to remember! The gift, the skill, is from God alone – I believe at the moment of conception. The Creator works in threads of understanding and talent which will allow us to become an intuitive and skilled musician.

There is a difference between a skilled musician and one who combines skill with intuition! I listened to many skilled musicians play, but not many possess the intuition and a depth of emotion to accompany the technical talent. My piano students frequently hear me say, “Anyone can play the notes on the page. It takes a special musician to make those notes come alive to express emotion.

And the ability to do that comes as a gift of God. Remember that it’s not something we can take credit for! It is the God’s Spirit going through our hands, our voice and blessing others, administering healing to the hurting, encouraging praise, ushering in an spirit of worship.

Just as the Lord used David’s musical gift to bring King Saul relief, we can turn over ourselves and our talent to Almighty God, asking that His Holy Spirit would use our music to heal.

The Devil Went Down to Georgia is a popular song released in 1979 by the Charlie Daniels Band.  People haven’t grown tired of it in 30 years, and it doesn’t look like they ever will.

The song’s roots are in a melody called “Lonesome Fiddle Blues.”  Charlie added the lyrics.  The Devil Went Down to Georgia Reached number three on the Billboard hot 100.  The RIAA says that amongst songs with a state name in the title, this is the top seller of all time. 

The plot is something like this.  The devil is having a slow time finding souls, so he travels to Georgia in desperation.  He’s willing to make deals.  He offers a deal to a young fiddler named Johnny.  It takes the form of a fiddle contest.  Johnny gets a golden fiddle if he wins.  The assumption is that the fiddle is worth a fortune.  Johnny bets his soul.

The Devil begins the contest with a tremendous performance.  Demons come from hell to help him put on a rock ‘n roll extravaganza.  It seems as if Johnny is doomed.  Johnny’s work with a simple fiddle is even better.  The devil can’t argue.  The devil hands over the Golden fiddle.  Johnny teases is the devil, telling him he’s open for a rematch at any time.  In the original version of the song, son of a gun was replaced by a more colorful phrase.

Remakes and parodies soon followed.  The Spanish version is“El Diablo bajo a Georgia”.  The cartoon Futurama features a contest between the main characters and the robot Devil.  After the robot double plays he’s attacked with the Golden fiddle so the people can escape.  There’s a very clever music video of the song on Youtube titled “Primus – The Devil Went Down to Georgia”.  The story is well animated.  There was even a sequel by Charlie Daniels.  It was called “The Devil Comes Back to Georgia”.
