Should You Have Guitar Lessons?
When learning the guitar, choosing whether to have lessons or not can be difficult. Many people would rather go it alone, and use books, or magazines to learn from. However, I feel it is a good idea to enlist the help of an experienced tutor, especially in the early stages, as this will ensure you learn the fundamentals correctly, and don’t develop bad habits. Having lessons, obviously, is going to cost more than learning on your own, but the long term benefits will outweigh the costs.

When it comes to guitar lessons, there are two sorts – private lessons, and group lessons. Group lessons normally cost less than private lessons, but they seem to be less popular. They can provide a more informal approach to learning, and interaction between group members can also aid the learning process. Private lessons do cost more money but, having the full attention of the teacher directed at just you for the entire lesson, means you will usually make more progress with this approach.
Many guitar tutors will be happy to come and teach you in your home, whereas others might request that you go to them. The ones who have to travel often charge more money. Another benefit of this is that often a teacher will have things like amplifiers and guitar effects set up in their studio for you to use, and they may have recording facilities to record your progress as well.
When it comes to actually finding a guitar teacher, I suggest you do a little bit of research, rather than just going with the first one you find. Try and discover what their teaching experience is. You should also enquire as to whether they have any formal qualifications, and whether they are able to teach all styles of guitar music. None of these things guarantee they’ll be a good teacher, but it should give a fairly good indication. Perhaps the most important thing is to choose a tutor whom you feel inspired by.
Different guitar teachers will charge different amounts for their services, depending on their experience. A world renowned guitar player may charge hundreds of dollars per hour, whereas a music student might only charge 20 dollars or so. In saying that, though, I would suggest that you go with the most experienced tutor your budget can stretch to.
That brings us to the end of this article on guitar lessons. I’ve hopefully helped you to make a more informed choice about whether or not you need them, and if so, how to go about finding them.
