What makes Jimi Hendrix’s sound easily recognizable from Carlos Santana? How can you easily tell metal from funk, even if let’s say the metal player and the funk player are playing the same song (very unlikely, but bear with me here)? The answer: guitarists use effects to color their sound and give it a kind of modification suited to the type of music involved.

Normally these effects can be housed separately in small effects pedals, or in multi-effects hardware, or built into amplifiers, or simulated in computer software. They can be used by themselves, or you can turn on combinations of effects to get a particular sound. Let’s try to identify the types of guitar effects available so you know which one is perfect for achieving the sound you want.

Distortion effects are popular in genres like rock, metal, etc. This is what produces the heavy, rough, raw sound you hear in these genres. Distortion effects can be divided into categories like overdrive/distortion (this is the well-known rough sound), fuzz (which is used to copy the sound of a vibrating torn speaker – thus being “fuzzy”), and high-gain (the thick, loud, “chugging” sound used in heavy metal). Almost all rock bands have these as a given, and is a good, basic investment.

Filtering effects are effects which shape the sound by enhancing or minimizing certain frequencies. Here you can find equalizers (similar to how normal equalizers work), and wahs (a foot-operated pedal that lets through increasingly higher or lower frequencies by rocking the pedal). The wah pedal is named because it sounds like a person saying a long “wah” when rocked (the low frequencies are the “w-“ and the high frequencies are the “-ah” part). You can hear this mostly in funky grooves.

Volume effects are just that, they modify the volume in different ways. Examples of these are volume pedals (these are just volume knobs in the shape of a pedal which you can rock back and forth), tremolos (which is used to copy the sound of a volume knob being turned up and down quickly, making the tone “fluctuate”), and compressors (used to preserve a certain volume level as the signal gets louder).

Time-based effects take a sound signal and copy it, making a kind of echoing sound. Delay pedals can change the delay time between the original sound and the copied sound, up to very long delay times, making a rolling echo-like sound (a notable user of delay effects is U2’s The Edge). Reverb pedals, however, copy the sound produced in a large space, where little echoes pile up and decay quickly. Aside from distortion effects, these are also well known, and may be an essential part of your rig.

Modulation effects are effects which actually change how the sound sounds. Examples of these are phase shifters (which makes a sort of whooshing sound by copying the original signal and then putting it out of phase regularly), flangers (which create a kind of speeding-up or slowing-down sound), chorus pedals (copying the sound of several guitarists playing at the same time), and rotary speakers (copying the sound of a signal going through spinning speakers, making a kind of wavy pitch-changing effect). These types of effects are used to create those experimental, space-age-sounds.

Pitch shifters change the pitch of a signal, then combines it with the original sound so that it sounds like two guitars blending together in harmony. It can even be used as a bass guitar if you set it one octave lower than normal, or produce a video-gamey sound if set one octave higher.

You can experiment with combinations of pedals and connect them in chains to figure out what type of sound you want to create. After some time you can hear which effects were used in your favorite songs, and hopefully this article can assist you on the road to creating your own sound, and adding new layers to your musical adventure.

·    After Practicing
The deterioration of the strings is a common problem amongst guitarists. If the strings start to rust, then they become very rough and have a higher propensity of cutting into your fingers. To prevent this, make sure that as soon as you have finished practicing take a soft cloth and clean the strings. A guitarist with cut fingers is not going to play as well, so it is important to make sure that the strings of your guitar do not get to this stage.

This is a very simple action, but it will get rid of all the oil, dirt and sweat that can accumulate on the strings. You might want to think about applying a thin layer of string conditioner before you re-case your guitar. These solutions are relatively inexpensive (a good one will cost less than ten US dollars) and they do a great job of preventing the oxidization of the strings that causes them to rust.

Your guitar is a very sensitive instrument, and is extremely sensitive to the environment in which it is stored. Wood is a porous substance, which means it can absorb moisture. Whilst most guitars are tolerant to a range of temperatures, excessive moisture will cause swelling which in turn causes the wood to warp and affects the overall sound. For ideal conditions, you should be looking at storing your guitar at around 50% humidity and a temperature of around 25 degrees C.

·    Scratches
It seems an obvious thing to say, but I have seen so many people make this mistake! Before you begin to play, make sure you remove all jewellery and other accoutrements that might scratch your instrument. Obviously, rings and bracelets could do this, but I have seen many people scratch or damage their instruments through simple things like belt buckles or the buttons on their jeans!

It’s not really rocket science – and if you treat your guitar with the respect that it deserves then you will find the rewards are much higher. You can prolong the lifespan of your guitar by applying simple common sense in the majority of cases.

Okay, I’m sure you’ve gotten an argument with your buddies at some point, comparing who you think are the top 10 guitar players of all time. We’ve all been there, but here’s the thing that few realize. Rock and Roll isn’t competition, it’s not about who’s better at this or that. Plus, there’s a LOT of musical styles, that comparing let’s say a metal shredder and a blues master doesn’t really work all that well. It’s like comparing Country to Rap.

That being said, there’s still a few guitarists that most people consider to be real heavies, and every time these types of lists come up, their names are always mentioned. These guitar players are arguably the most skilled at a specific technique, or are the most influential guitarists to other aspiring musicians, and that’s why they appear on my top 10 guitar players list.

As for me, this is probably my top 10 list of guitar players:

1. Jimi Hendrix
Enough said? Jimi Hendrix is almost always at the top of every “top guitarists” list! He turned the electric guitar from a novelty into a laboratory, experimenting with sounds never even dreamed of before on the electric guitar. Hendrix has a raw, fuzzy electric sound that is recognizable from the first note, which has been the inspiration of many younger guitarists since. His stage presence is also electrifying and powerful. “Hey Joe” and “Fire” set the foundation for a solid monument of rock that stands to this day.

2. Jimmy Page
Another Jimmy! The Led Zeppelin guitar master has been very influential to a lot of rockers nowadays, and his guitar licks are legendary and instantly recognizable. His solo of “Heartbreaker” is immortal, and “Black Dog” and “Stairway to Heaven” are unshakable rock classics. And if you can think of anybody else who has a guitar solo with a violin bow, I’d like to know about it? That’s from “Dazed and Confused”,

3. BB King
When you say blues, everything all boils down to its master and ambassador: BB King. He paved the way for the newer generation of blues players, from Eric Clapton to John Mayer. BB King’s powerful bending and vibrato are classic blues techniques, still used today. Also, his guitar is also legendary – who else names their guitar Lucille?

4. Chuck Berry
You know that four-note riff that always reminds you of 50’s rock n’ roll? That came from Chuck Berry. Today’s rock n’ roll wouldn’t be the same without the great song that is “Johnny B. Goode”!

5. Keith Richards
Keith Richards is a member of one of the longest-lasting, most influential active rock bands The Rolling Stones. Don’t tell me you aren’t aware of that classic fuzzy three-note riff from “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”! For all the hits the Stones put out that became foundations of other hit songs, Keith Richards also deserves a spot on the top 10 guitarists list.

6. Kirk Hammett
Metal was never the same way with the coming of Metallica. Kirk Hammett rewrote hard rock history with the pounding solos of “Master of Puppets” and, arguably their most popular song, “Enter Sandman”.

7. Carlos Santana
If you’re talking of instantly recognizable tone, there’s the master of Latin-infused rock, Carlos Santana. Before his now-popular jams with other artists, he was a Latin-rhythm purist, improvising with solos that are full of passion and spiritual meaning. Before hits like “Smooth”, there were the soaring, sustained instrumental solos of “Europa (Earth’s Cry Heaven’s Child)” and the like.

8. Kurt Cobain
The misunderstood genius, Kurt Cobain pretty much ended the era of 80’s “glam” metal in a totally unique way. He favored simple, heavy tunes instead of hair metal’s theatric style, and it reflected better the angst of the time. His most memorable contribution to rock and roll was the original anthem of misunderstood generations, the four-chord monster “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.

9. The Edge
While many guitarists think playing at finger-blinding speed equates to skill, The Edge is known for playing short, precise, repetitive solos. But he and his rolling delay effects created the most passionate, most anthemic rock songs in history, from “Bad” to “Where The Streets Have No Name”. With the Edge at the lead, it’s hard not to scream in triumph.

10. Eric Clapton
A true son of the blues, Eric Clapton had influences in rock, creating classics like “Layla” with his early band Derek and the Dominoes, and progressing to one of the most recognizable blues guitarists, from “Bell Bottom Blues” to his heartbreaking “Tears In Heaven”.

I’m sure a lot of you will have top 10 guitar players lists that are very different from mine, but that’s the effect of musical influences; we have a lot of talented guitarists from a lot of different styles and genres to choose from. Whoever we pick as our top 10 guitarists says a lot about our favorite styles, criteria and our personality as guitarists. Till then, happy rocking!

Sure you can be the life of the party or someone who is really adored by music lovers or, the list goes on. You can play exceptional music through the strumming of your guitar. And many fans would shout out “Encore!” That would be really nice isn’t it? Do you like the idea? Well, read on as this article shows you some of the most exciting and fulfilling advantages when you have learned to master the techniques and chords in the world of guitar music.

Playing a guitar enhances your thought process to work hard and to command your hands on mentally memorizing where to place your finger on a particular fret, pressing on the right chord and learning the right way to strum.

You, yourself, is a unique individual. With any given ten people only one becomes a pure musician. And by some luck, that person is a guitarist. Or can be someone with ultra musical talent who can play not only the guitar but many different instruments and even some percussion ones. Some say it is learned but real talent comes from the soul. It is that spirit within you that makes you distinct.

Nobody can call you a guitarist with no specific talent. Yes, you could flunk all of your exams and miss every graded recitation during class hours but when school or house parties come, you are the star. Even an A+ won’t come close to the recognition you can achieve from being an accomplished artist.

You are the “it” guy. Everyone can hate you or mess you up. But the moment you have learned to become a master in your own craft, everyone will recognize how good you are. Even those who never or didn’t know you will find an effort to. Everyone will respect you for the talent that you are.

More advantages are viewed just by playing the guitar. Playing is one thing but mastering is another. So if you are still struggling to play such tunes, don’t give up that dream. Although it may be only a hobby or past time, you never know, with skill, it may take you to new heights. Something brighter. Something more intense. Something close to Hollywood.

It’s always seemed a shame to me that the majority of people who decide to learn a musical instrument give up after just a few months. When starting out, learning the guitar can indeed be difficult, but that is no need to give up. There are many issues and problems beginners may have to confront when they learn to play the guitar, and I will address some of the more common ones here.

The first thing you’ll need to learn is how to hold a guitar properly. If you are going to play it standing up you will have to use a guitar strap to support it. The strap should be adjusted so it hangs just above your waste to provide the most natural and comfortable playing position. You should hold the neck with your fretting arm, which should be bent at about 90 degrees. Hold the guitar so that the neck points upwards a little bit. To play the guitar sitting down you will either rest it on your left leg and keep the neck pointing up, or you will rest it on your right leg and hold the neck horizontal. The main thing is to find the way that feels the most comfortable for you.

To play the guitar you can either use your fingers, or you can use a pick. If you’re using a pick you should rest the palm of your picking hand just in front of the guitars bridge to keep it steady. If you’re using your fingers then let your hand float just above the strings. You should place your fretting hand fingers over the strings on the neck, with one finger covering one fret. You should make sure your left thumb stays about halfway down the back of the neck, in line with your second finger.

It is vital that you learn the names of the guitar’s strings before you start playing. From lowest to highest (thickest to thinnest) they are EDGBE. Now you are ready to learn to play chords. You will want to learn as many chords as you can, as being able to strum chords will mean you’ll be able to play lots of different music in a very short space of time. You will usually learn chords by referencing chord diagrams. These consist of a grid representing the frets and the strings of the guitar. There are dots on the grid which show you where to put your fingers. This system is a fast and easy way to learn new chords.

The next thing I’d like to mention is the importance of keeping your instrument in tune. If you’re guitar is out of tune, it is going to sound horrible, no matter how well you play it. There are various ways of tuning a guitar, but the easiest, and quickest, is by using an electronic guitar tuner. Simply plug in your guitar, and it will show you if you are out of tune as you play each string in turn.

The last thing to mention is that many beginners have a few physical problems when first starting out. For one thing, your fingers will find it difficult, and maybe even painful, to make some of the shapes and stretches you’ll be asking them to at first. If this is the case then you should take a break from practicing until your hands feel more comfortable again. Over time this pain should disappear as your hands get used to the stretches. Also, the skin on a beginners finger tips is likely to be soft, which can be another cause of pain. This will also get better as your finger tips get used to playing the guitar.
