Can you really learn piano online? It is something to think about when new to it. Searching for the answer to this may quickly become a priority so that the beginner piano lessons can be learned.

There are a few ways to do this, but it depends on how we define the question. One definition would be learning this by any of the routes available. The other definition could imply that you teach yourself piano. This essentially means that you may attempt to learn the piano without any assistance from others. Let us explore both of these a little.

One of the ways to learn, is through an actual music or piano school. It can be expensive, but the surroundings and environment may be more enjoyable for some individuals. The interaction with other people aiming for similar goals, and having someone available to ask any questions you may have.

A private piano teacher is another way. This is typically the highest priced option, but it can also be beneficial to learn the piano this way for some individuals. The personal attention recieved is one of the good things about this.

When it comes to learning the piano yourself, it can be tricky. There is no cost to search online for potential websites and places that may help to learn this. The challenge with this is to find what you need to learn at the right period of time, and also finding solid resources for it.

There are a few things to think about when doing this completely on your own. Learning how to play the piano with both hands, reading music, rhythm, and learning the keys are a few things to consider. These are some of the general outlines of things that are usually taught in beginning piano lessons.

There is another way that can be considered a hybrid of everything above. Courses exist that will let you learn piano online. The cost of this is typically low if we compare it to a private piano teacher or a school. They do have some drawbacks, but also offer a fair amount of benefits in exchange.

As with teaching yourself piano individually or a personal piano teacher, the social aspect is missing. Videos are utilized and the instructions are done in simple steps. Learning is significantly easier when your focus is simply on the next step at hand. Not everyone agrees that there is a special age advantage for learning any musical instrument. What would be good advice for piano students would be different for guitar students.  So, is there such a condition as too old?

The quick answer is: Opinions vary widely on this topic.  

Young students – seem to have a natural attraction to music, especially the classics.  When to start training depends on each child’s physical capability. Age 7 is often preferred by some professionals, especially for the piano. However, age 4 is possible for the piano.  Obviously the child’s physical size factors in the decision. The instrument needs to be appropriately sized to fit the student. The training course must fit the student’s age. 

Many research projects have validated the multiple benefits of music training for young people. The piano is commonly the preferred starting instrument.   Mainly because no special fingering has to be learned (as compared to a violin or clarinet, etc.) just to play it. The piano fingering is, in comparison, fairly straight forward.

Naturally your youngster will practice with more enthusiasm on an instrument they like and have chosen. Vocal training should be considered also to enhance their education.

Many private teachers have minimum age requirements, for example – age seven.  Some will accept a pupil under certain situations such as already being obviously gifted.  Assuming you are seeking a private instructor for your child you may chose to interview more than one teacher.  Starting formal training at age three is very unusual for any student.

Sometimes a child knows what their preference is at a very early age, and you can’t seem to alter their choice.  Consider all the world class athletes and musicians who started as young children.

It appears to all boil down to your personal commitment as the parent.  How involved are you planning to be? Do you already have an instrument? Several options exist for you.

For the rest of us, of any age – any age is OK to begin, but your attitude is a very important consideration.  For example:

Preteens – perhaps the prime age to begin music lessons.

Teens – great learners, if interested.  Consider a guitar for maximum portable entertainment.

Young adults – less free time, perhaps, still great students – taking lessons deliberately.

Middle age adults – same situation, probably won’t desire to be performers.

A few points on what to expect when getting going learning about music and any instrument.  The basics are important – too quickly. Trust me -been there-done that.

Instruments come in all sizes and shapes. Some have strings that are pucked. Some have keys to press. Some you hit with sticks. But not to worry, most instruments are ready to play when first turned on. You will learn more details as you go along. When all else fails, read the instruction book-if there is one.

Understanding the instrument is important..It’s OK to skip the history lesson, and most of the ‘how it works’ details.

If you want to play skip the printed music, it’s still beneficial to understand the fundamentals of reading music.  Knowing what and where a given note is, both on the instrument and on the printed music is important.

There’s a lot that’s helpful to learn before actually playing any music. The instrument layout and the note sounds that it makes have relationships that our brains can easily learn.  Not to worry. A very important basic skill is learning the note’s names and locations. It’s very simple to learn where they are on the instrument. However, being able to name the printed notes instantly is NOT as simple because of the bass and treble clefs. The design and naming of the notes on the printed music has evolved over time. And probably won’t change much anytime soon.  So – just learn it.

In case you didn’t know, the name of a note on the printed music depends on whether it is in the treble clef (right hand – but not always) or bass clef (left hand – usually). Sound confusing? It is, until it gets explained to you – then it all makes perfect sense. You can’t change it.

If you are anything like me, until you get fairly good at reading the note names, you will be using all sorts of mental games, etc. to figure this out. Trying to do this while playing a piece is frustrating. I’m still working on it.

When it comes to learning the piano, the first thing you should be considering is the note. The note is the fundament, the building block of all music. It is also what makes the music difficult to learn – just the sheer numbers of notes can be overwhelming to the first time reader.

But don’t panic, as there are a number of techniques that you can learn to not only memorize them, but understand them as well. To begin with, you will need to learn the first 12 major notes. For the majority of us, we will have encountered the do-re-mi scale at some point in our schooling, and we have applied that here to show you how those notes that you learnt way back in school are interpreted into musical notes.

Once you have learnt the 12 notes, then you are well on your way to playing the piano. As soon as you have these notes memorized, then there are a lot doors that open up for you to progress. This knowledge will serve as your foundation into the world of the piano player as you progress on to the next step: learning the 12 major chords.

The chords in the table below are the most important you will learn on your musical journey, and along with the notes will provide the bedrock for your piano playing skills. The chords actually correspond directly to the guitar as well, so once you have learnt these you can play both the piano AND the guitar!

On the table above you can also see the keys (notes) that are to be pressed in order to form the chord. The comparison between learning to play the piano and learning to play the guitar doesn’t end there – in both, all you really need to learn is the twelve major chords and then the proper positioning of your fingers.

Learning these 12 chords will put you in a position that makes all the others much easier to learn. As I’m sure you know, there are a great deal more chords than just the 12 we have illustrated here. These, however, are the easiest to memorize.

When you begin to tackle more complex chords as you continue to learn the piano, many will seem really complicated and difficult to learn. In reality, however, they are just variations on the chords that we have illustrated above, and if you already know those, then you shouldn’t have too much of a problem. When you have mastered these – you will more than likely find it a lot easier than you think – you can move on to learning other chords.

The most important thing to remember as you memorize more and more chords is the location of middle C. Bearing this location in mind as you progress will help you to discover that all the other chords are based around its location. The variations here are known as the minor chords. The biggest difference between them is that the major chords require only 3 fingers to play – the minor chords can involve up to five fingers.

When you are new to playing the piano, and just starting out, a lot of this can seem overwhelming. However, once you have learned the principles as we have set out above, the world really is your oyster. You will find that the rest will come quite naturally, especially as you discover that much of the variations are simply based on what you already know.

If you are wanting to play some of your favorite songs, but you aren’t very adept about figuring out how to play them on your own, you can find printable sheet music online. My partner has a program that takes a song and gives it to him in sheet music form.

This can be great for anyone who wants to write their own songs, needs to learn another song in a hurry, or who just can’t seem to get the right notes. I know many musicians can easily pick up a song straight away, but there are some out there that can be very hard to figure out. It might be in an unusual key, or it might just be that the notes are just too hard to pick out individually. If the software works correctly, it can do all of this for you, and it gives you printable sheet music to view while learning the song.

You also have to remember that there will be times when printable sheet music will not be entirely accurate. You might find some errors, so don’t think that it’s all right. This is a great way to learn songs you can’t figure out, even if the person who transcribed the music didn’t get it right either. If they got most of it correct, you can probably sort out the wrong notes yourself. If you find that it is very wrong, you still have one choice.

Though I’m not clear on the specifics, I remember that there were many times when I had to share sheet music because the school could not afford to get any more. I would assume this meant that every sheet of music was bought and that it would have been illegal to make copies. This might be the same for printable sheet music. You should ensure you read the small print on any site that offers this to you so you are sure you aren’t making a huge mistake.
