Learning to play the guitar can be an entertaining and satisfying experience.   There’s nothing better than performing in front of your friends and family by playing some popular songs.  Unfortunately, it is not easy to learn guitar for beginners especially if you don’t know where to start.  It takes time to figure out how to play the guitar, and if you are impatient, you may quit before you are able to play anything worthwhile.

To learn the guitar requires you to master the fundamentals.  First off, your guitar needs to be in tune, otherwise every note you play will sound awful.  Without tuning your guitar on a regular basis, your strings will become stretched and sound distorted.  The standard tuning for a guitar is E-A-D-G-B-E.  Although there are other tunings, it is best to start with this one first.

Once your guitar is in tune, you can start playing some notes with it.  To play a note, take one of the strings, and press down on it on one of the frets with one finger, and pluck at the string with your other hand.  Play around and do the same thing with different frets on the same string. Congratulations, you are playing the guitar.

Now that you can play a few notes, the next step is to learn to play some basic chords.  Using a guitar chord chart, find a few simple chords to try and play.  It will take some time to train your fingers to play chords properly, but don’t give up.  You will get the hang of them, and eventually you should be able to go back and forth between a few alternate chords at once.

There can’t be many people who’ve not fantasised about becoming a guitar hero. Standing onstage, legs apart thrashing out power chords and blistering guitar solos loud enough to make peoples ears bleed. And there are a number of truly great electric guitars that have stood the test of time.

One of the most famous electric guitars is the Fender Stratocaster. Originally designed way back in 1954 the Fender Strat was the instrument favoured by the late, great Jimi Hendrix. It’s also the instrument chosen by the likes of Eric Clapton and Pete Townsend of the Who. The Fender Stratocaster continues to be as popular today as it ever was and a whole new generation of guitarists are discovering this great, iconic instrument.

Another well known guitar from Fender is the Telecaster. This beautifully simple instrument was first introduced as the Broadcaster in late 1949 and has been in continuous production ever since. There are many talented and well known guitar players who prefer to play Fender Teles. Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones is probably one of the most famous guitarists who chooses to play Telecasters.

If we are talking about classic guitars we must of course mention the fantastic Gibson Les Paul. This is another truly great electric guitar, first made back in the 1950s and in continuous production ever since. Jimmy Page, of Led Zeppelin and Yardbirds fame, is just one guitarist who loves the Gibson Les Paul. Another great guitarist who made the sound of this instrument famous in the song ‘Alright Now’ was the lat Paul Kossoff of the band Free.

Since I’ve given a mention to two Fenders its only fair that I should talk about two great Gibsons. I could have chosen the fantastic ES335, a favourite with many great guitarists, including BB King but instead I have chosen the exceptional Gibson SG. This great electric guitar with its distinctive looks was first introduced in the early 1960s initially to compete with the popular Fender Stratocaster. This is the guitar used by Angus Young of Australian rock band ACDC for all of their well known rock anthems. This great instrument was also the guitar used by Tony Iommi, guitarist with seventies rock band Black Sabbath.

There are just so many great guitars but these four are, without doubt, at the top of the list of great electric guitars of our age.

A lot of folks want to play guitar because they think it would be interesting to learn to play some of their favorite songs. There are many ways to learn guitar these days, but is there a best way to get started with playing the guitar?

I too had this same motivation when I started learning to play guitar several years ago.  Back then, I wanted to be able to play some guitar songs and show off to my girlfriend.  So I asked around and found a good guitar teacher who could give me private guitar lessons.  This was okay in the beginning, and I learned the guitar basics in my first month.  However, private lessons are quite expensive and after my first month of lessons I decided private lessons were too expensive for me.  Plus, it was such an annoyance to keep my appointments twice a week and drive over to his house for lessons. 

I still wanted to play guitar though, so I decided to start teaching myself on my own, using the best guitar resources found online. You likely don’t suppose that playing a guitar is as difficult as playing more physically straining sports, but it is. Can you see yourself jogging a mile without stretching your leg muscles? Playing guitar without stretching your fingers isn’t something anyone should do. You probably don’t think this, but playing a guitar can mean some serious hand and arm injury. And we all don’t want to get hurt, do we? This is why you should never neglect to warm up before any guitar session or gig. One of the most basic ways of warming up is by doing a few scales that you run up and down a number of times. Try to loosen your muscles by doing scales and speeding up gradually. Do chord transitions after that. Perform a few minimal chord transitions and then work it out from there. Slowly speed up just like you did with the scales. Keep a comfortable playing position when you’re ready. Keep your hands where they can play easily and give them enough space for playing.
