From the Black Cat to Public TV, the Dullards are visible on the Washington, DC circuit. They have been in the studio recording; this is good because I have a long road trip ahead of me and I don’t think the Dullards’ catalogue will get me that far.

Learning how to play the violin can be a challenging but rewarding experience whatever your age or skill level. The beginning for violinists is how to hold the instrument, how to finger the notes accurately, how to hold and use a bow and how to produce a good tonal quality.

Holding the violin is crucial and many people learn to hold it like a banjo to begin with. Referred to as the banjo position. The instrument is tucked and held under the right arm, just like a banjo allowing the player to pluck the straings with the right hand thumb and get used to reading and playing some basic open string notes.

Once this has been mastered then the violin is lifted and placed between the left shoulder and chin. The left arm is then curved under the neck of the violin and the hand arches around and over the top of the strings.

From here the violinist will learn how to play the violin by holding notes down on the neck. Much like a guitarist only there are no frets. The player must use their ears to pitch each note correctly and use muscular memory to memorise the note and finger positions carefully.

There are 2 main ways a violinist creates sound.

1. Is with the bow. It is drawn across the strings in both directions, known as up bow and down bow. This can be varied to create different lengths, volume, timbre and shape.
2. The second is similar to the banjo position where the string is plucked with the right hand fingers. This is called pizzicato and creates a short stoccato sound.

Amoung the headliners of the VH1 concert this year is Adele and Leona Lewis who are looking forward to applying themselves into the American market.

Kelly Clarkson and Miley Cyrus will also perform at the music channel’s event who is actually returning after a five year hiatus. A VH1 spokesman said to a local newspaper that the four women involved in this year’s event are an amazingly talented group of singers and this is one of their most exciting years of the event.

The show is a fundraiser for the ‘Save the Music Foundation’ which will be live on the music channel in the US on 17th September. The non-profit organisation was initially created to promote musical education for young kids in school. The entire event takes place at Brooklyn Academy of Music and local kids from school get free entry.

The concert has always played host to some of the biggest Diva's in the world and has always generated a lot of money and interest into the local musical community. This is easily the most crucial time in Leona Lewis's career and it is a very exciting time. She recently won the notorious hit music TV program, X-Factor and since then her popularity has really gone out of control (in a good way).

The local VH1 concert has been a regular contributor of musical instruments to local schools which has been fantastic for the younger kids.3m have been donated to numerous schools in over 100 cities. Anything from acoustic guitars, electric guitars and classic guitar.

Many schools across the world have always benefited from this concert and people have since developed a lot of interest in the yearly show. This year's line up is slightly different now that two British girls are involved in the line up.

This has always been a big event for any rising music super star and it is a fantastic way to help raise awareness for schools and the younger generations passion for music.

The Devil Went Down to Georgia Was first heard by the public in 1979, performed by the Charlie Daniels band.  30 years later it’s still popular.

The song’s roots are in a melody called “Lonesome Fiddle Blues.” Charlie took the song, raised it an octave, and set lyrics to it. The song reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, making The Devil Went Down to Georgia the band’s most popular hit. The RIAA says that amongst songs with a state name in the title, this is the top seller of all time.

The plot is something like this. The devil is having a slow time finding souls, so he travels to Georgia in desperation. He’s willing to make deals. He happens upon a young fiddler named Johnny, to whom he offers one of these deals. The Devil challenges Johnny to a fiddle contest. If Johnny wins he receives the golden fiddle upon which the devil plays. The assumption is that the fiddle is worth a fortune. If the devil wins, however, Johnny loses his soul.

The devil goes first, and he’s a hard act to follow. He performs with a host of demons in a big production that sounds like something out of a rock opera. It seems Johnny, a simple boy with a fiddle, is doomed. But Johnny’s simple and pure fiddle work is even better. When he’s finished playing, there’s no argument. The devil gives him the golden fiddle. Johnny goads the devil, telling him “I told you once you son of a gun I’m the best there’s ever been,” while challenging him to a rematch at any time. In the original version of the song, son of a gun was replaced by a more colorful phrase.

The song has been remade and parodied.  There’s a Spanish version called “El Diablo bajo a Georgia”.  In Futurama the main characters save their robot friend by challenging the robot Devil to such a contest.  The humans cheat by attacking the robot Devil with the Golden fiddle. There’s a very clever music video of the song on Youtube titled “Primus – The Devil Went Down to Georgia“.  It includes a very clever animated version of the story.  There was even a sequel by Charlie Daniels.  “The Devil Comes Back to Georgia” was its name.

The Devil Went Down to Georgia was sung by Charlie Daniel’s band.  And if you heard ‘em sing it when it was done you’d give them boys a hand.

South Florida Wedding Band

“The music makes the wedding.”

When talking about a South Florida wedding band, you’ll hear this phrase in a lot of different places, from a lot of different people.  This is considered conventional wisdom in the wedding industry as well as by most”party mavens” in the know.

I would even take it a step further and say, “FUN makes the wedding;” which increases dramatically once you hit the dance floor, and which is primarily a function of your music. That’s why the selection of your wedding band is a critical choice.

“When’s the Band Coming Back?”

These are the words you’ll hear when you hire a band that does not perform continuous music.  This does not mean that all the South Florida wedding musicians are onstage for four hours nonstop, but that any breaks taken by its members are staggered and coordinated

with the food service so that the full band is onstage dancing your guests between courses, and there are one to three musicians on stage playing background music for dining.  Sort of a “skeleton crew.”

Some bands put CDs on and take a 15 to 20 minute break every hour.  This is usually timed so that there are breaks throughout the evening, and they play their last set to end at the appointed time. 

In this scenario, the band frequently is not coordinating with the food service, and may find themselves playing during dining, and taking their scheduled breaks while people are at their seats in between courses.

Of course this prompts the question, “When’s the band coming back?It can really cause a lull in the party which is hard to recover from.  It is hard to get momentum on the dance floor and keep the energy going when the band takes these scheduled periodic breaks.

By associating with these key people in the formative years of your career, you stand to benefit a lot. They tremendously improve your prospects and serve as solid track-record.
