Playing Piano by Ear 101

You can actually learn the piano by “playing by ear,” but it’s not the common route. The common way to learn piano is to learn to read music simultaneously. Most professional musicians can play by ear regardless of how they learned, but this was a talent fine tuned with years and years of practice, reading music and listening. That being said, playing by ear is sometimes a case of being born with the talent. It is said that Mozart could play and compose great and complicated compositions as a child before he ever saw a sheet of music.

Reading music, however, is an important basic and most beginning piano instruction will include music reading. It will give you all the basics you need to learn to play by ear. Without good technique and a solid understanding of music theory, playing by ear will be much more difficult for most people. So spend time with your scales and positions because it’s important. These seemingly mundane tasks should be a part of every practice session. They help to develop good habits, and just as important, they help to train your ear. We’re not all Mozart, but we can gain some of his skill with practice!

Once you reach an intermediate level, you may need to search for a teacher skilled in the art of playing by ear. This will give you another boost in your playing abilities. They can help you learn the tricks of the trade for listening that will help you identify chord progressions that form the foundation of any piano playing. They usually take this skill and combine it with teachings related to music.

Whether you want to play for your own pleasure, play for friends and family, or even make a career in music, you’ll be well-served by opting to both read music and hone those playing by ear skills. If you’ve ignored either, it’s never too late to start. There are even Internet or computer-based courses, such as Rocket Piano Software, that teach these skills.

Start searching, keep learning and make sure you have fun in the process. Once you have a beautiful piano and piano lamp, and you can both read music and play by ear, you’ll be a complete pianist!

A Small Slice Of Atreyu History

Atreyu is a metalcore band from Orange County, California that was formed in 1998. The band consists of five guys, Alex Varkatzas, Dan Jacobs, Travis Miguel, Marc McKnight, and Brandon Saller. Alex is lead vocal and lyricist, Dan and Travis play guitar, Marc is the bassist and Brandon plays the drums along with doing some vocals.

Accentuating Atreyu’s unconventional aura is the two-headed vocal delivery of Alex and drummer Brandon Saller. Alex is the ferocious, menacing, caustic and seething skull while Brandon is the tranquilizing, harmonious, Elysian cranium. This vocal duality migrates the gamut of melodramatic expression creating an ethereal yet turbulent soundscape.

The band was not originally named Atreyu, they were called Retribution until they found out about another band from Hemet, California had the name. The band got the name from the book/movie The Never-Ending Story.

With regard to Atreyu discography, back in 1998 they have had four studio albums released, Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses in 2002, The Curse in 2004, A Death Grip on Yesterday in 2006 and Lead Sails Paper Anchor in 2007.

Each of their four studio albums have sold about 200,000 copies each. Back then, the band only consisted of four members: Alex, Dan, Brandon, and Kyle Stanley. In 1999, the band released their first album, an independent, seven track, EP album called Visions. The Album was only sold at their concerts. Their second album, a five track EP, under the underground label Tribunal Records.

Flash Back 2001- 2006
In 2001, the band finally signed with a big name record company called Victory Records, who seemed to favor young metalcore bands. In 2002, they released their first full-length studio album, Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses. Around this time, the band introduced the drummer, Brandon, as another singer for the band. When their music video for Lip Gloss and Black appeared on the Headbangers Ball and Uranium in 2003, the band got some much-needed attention. The band’s second studio album, The Curse, was released in 2004 and sold about 300,000 copies.

After their second album release, Atreyu was featured on the sound track for Mr. and Mrs. Smith doing a cover of “You Give Love a Bad Name,” originally performed by Bon Jovi. Recent Years 2007 – Now

In the beginning of 2007, Atreyu signed with Hollywood Records for America along with making an international deal with Roadrunner Records. This album was met with mixed reviews because of the band’s new sound. Despite the bands new sound, it hit number 8 on the Billboard 200. Marc recently posted a blog stating that Atreyu would be recording their fifth album in the early spring of 2009 along with some Atreyu merch to keep their fans content.

Spaced Oddities at Bestival 2009

Hurry! You had better get a move on quickly. Contrary to historical opinion, the Space Race has not yet ended. There is only a matter of weeks left to get your act together. I am referring to the Space Oddity theme at this year’s much anticipated and award winning Bestival. It is probably aimed to coincide with the fortieth anniversary of the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing.

You have to get on with your costume as time is short, whether you are going as Barbarella or the dashing D’Artagnon of the Millennium Falcon. But if you can’t be bothered, or don’t have enough time then there is no need to worry. There are plenty of choices of costume available to hire or buy from the Dressing-Up area, within the Bestival site. There are other things of interest here, like hair styling and having your nails painted, and let’s not forget the amazing moustache bar. If you like to be shinny and sparkle under the stars, then this Bestival is for you. From my previous experience, I found the people to be great and inspiring, fueling my anticipation over the whole weekend!

The Bestival 2009 is set to blast off in its now familiar setting at the Robin Hill Country Park from the 11-13 September. Massive Attack and Lily Allen are amonst the featured stars at this year’s Bestival, along with the wonderfully named ‘They Came From the Stars’.

Fortunately you don’t need a warp drive to get you there, as Wightlink operate the best IOW ferry service available. You can either book online or call 081 376 1000 to find out about the different ticket options and to hear about further details.

If this is not your idea of entertainment, then check our guide to see what else is on offer this summer in the Isle of Wight. The Isle of Wight has lots of attractions, including some of the best UK beaches!

Picking The Best Guitar For Beginning Guitar Players

Finding the best guitar for a beginner can be hard but the most important things to look at are price, reliability and versatility. Based on my experience, the Squier Stratocaster meets these criteria and is easily the best guitar for beginners.

Developed by Fender, the Squier Stratocaster is one of the best value beginner guitars and it can usually be found in a local music store or online for between $180 and $230. No beginner needs a more expensive instrument and you can always look for a another guitar once you have developed your guitar playing skills.

Even if you want to buy a better guitar a year or two after you start playing, you can always keep your Squier as a backup because it is famous for its reliability. The Fender name means that as long as you take care of the instrument it should last for awhile with relatively few problems. For instance, some people have reported that the strap buttons can become loose after a couple of months but this is easily fixed and the fact that this is the biggest problem the Squier faces with wear is a testament to its reliability.

Of course, price and dependability mean little if the guitar isn’t versatile enough. It is important that beginners have a capable guitar on which to try all different types of music. The Squier Strat gives you all of these capabilities and although it lacks the thrills of more advanced guitars, it gives beginners a solid foundation for learning to play the guitar.

When shopping for this guitar, don’t mix up the Squier Stratocaster with the Squier Affinity Strat or the Fender Stratocaster. The Affinity is a much less expensive guitar and it shows whereas the Fender Stratocaster is the more expensive model ($350). The Squier Stratocaster is in the middle of these two models and is the best buy for the a new guitarist.

Overall, the Squier Stratocaster is the best guitar for beginners. Its value, durability and versatility make it the ideal choice for beginning guitar learners.  Go to your local music store and try to pick one up.  Pair it up with a good guitar course and you will definitely love it.

Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band – A Closer Look

What’s the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band? Country and folk music in America are still very popular. They’ve been around for a long time. Many big time groups went on long tours. Many lesser known groups still do quite well. Here’s information on one of them.

The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band had its start in California in 1966. Many musicians have come and gone.  There are still two who have been there from the start.  These are the singer guitarist Jeff Hanna and drummer Jimmy Fadden.  Their goal was to not have to work.

The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band began as a jug band. Early jug bands were jazz bands who added the jug into which someone would blow as a novelty. In Memphis jug bands were more about the blues. They used washboards for percussion. One famous jug band often appeared in the TV series The Andy Griffith Show. They were portrayed as hillbillies who first had a run in with Ernest T. Bass. Andy would generally perform with them playing his guitar.

Buy for Me the Rain was the first single released by the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band.  It became a top 40 hit and was even exposed on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.  Jack Benny, of all people, joined the band to play it, and they once performed the song with the Doors.  Talk about diverse.

In 1968 the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band had appeared in movies and as an extra act at concerts. They appeared in one of the worst musicals ever made – Paint Your Wagon. They even opened for Bill Cosby at Carnegie Hall. They joined a jam session with the great Dizzy Gillespie.

In the 1970s they went country. They went to Nashville, Tennessee where they had some success including two Grammy nominations. They had a tour in Japan. They headlined in front of 350,000 people at the Ozark Music Festival.

The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band kind of disappeared, but popped up now and then. They performed on Saturday Night Live and returned to Nashville to record other songs and albums.  They won two Grammy awards and one of their works was named album of the year.

The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band has been heard all over the world.

Learn Piano Online – What You Need to Know

Rocket Piano Video

Being musical is truly a gift and one that so few people get to enjoy. Many actually begin to learn to play instruments when they are children but then give it up as they get a little older.

Unfortunately, they also tend to regret it and try learning instruments as they get older. However, as we age we do not seem to pick up learning in the same way as we did when our minds were thirsty so this may make learning piano, or any other instrument for that matter, that bit more difficult.

If you are considering learning piano then the likelihood is that you will get frustrated with all of the resources out there. There are so many to look at but they all tell you something completely different from anything else out there and seem to advocate their ways as the only ways of learning piano.

Rocket piano is designed to get you quickly and easily to start playing remarkable piano.

Of course, all of the courses and methods do work for some people but do not work for everyone, which is why you need to be able to choose the best possible options for you. Learning piano is an art and not a race so take your time and choose your best options using the following guide on how to choose the best aid for you:

• Play To Your Strengths – Do you learn better one particular way? When learning piano, all some people have to do is listen to a tune and then try to replicate it, whereas others need to see a demonstration or read a book. You alone know best how you learn so you alone are best placed to find a solution that caters for that. Never be sucked in by promises and offers. The only thing you should assess right from the start is how the program actually works. From there, you can find the best review for you.

• Look At Consumer Reviews – Other people will have tried learning piano with the various programs on offer so make sure that you take a look at their reviews so you can assess whether or not each one is worth the money. Some are bargains but others are a waste of space. Always remember what does not work for one may work for you but bear in mind that you should only take the constructive criticism on board.

• Assess Your Own Level – Are you a beginner at learning piano or have you skills from your childhood? Are you playing for the first time or do you have a good base knowledge that you want to enhance? Every program is aimed at a specific level so choose the right one for you so that you can follow it and enjoy!
• Assess Your Affordability – Do not pay more money than you can afford for learning piano. It is difficult when you are looking at fantastic promotions and offers, promises that you can learn to play in a few hours and so on. However, you have to make sure that you are within your own price range because until you have it there with you, you never know how good it is going to be.

• Make Sure You Have The Correct Attitude– Are you learning piano because you want to? Will you stick to any program that you buy? Are you prepared to commit to it? If the answer to any of these questions is no then you might not be ready to start learning piano just yet. You have to want to commit the time and energy to it or else it will be a waste of money so ask this as a final check before you hit the purchase button!
