Trends in music seem to repeat every 2 decades- so were currently in the midsts of an 80s revival -a good thing?

Time blurs and clouds our memories -and styles and objects which were ridiculed at the time are now ‘cool’. Acts from the 80s are beginning to reform and release new albums, proving they can show the youngsters how its done.

There has been a revival in thrash metal, a genre which spawned classic albums from Slayer (Reign in blood) and Metallica (Master of puppets) and now has younger bands such as Municipal waste and Evile. The original thrash bands such as Exodus, Kreator and Testament are recieving the credit they deserve and have taken the time to give us more albums and tours. Iron Maiden returned to top form again, much like their 80s haydays and the Darkness shone the spotlight on glam rock. Anthrax brought back Joey Belladonna, only for him to leave again afew months later, with Anthrax then searching for yet another singer. Dave Mustaine called it a day on Megadeth due to a hand injury, only to recover and release new albums -expect another new one this year. Kreator spent the 90s moving away from the thrash sound they help develop with 1986’s ‘a pleasure to kill’, only to return to the well with 2001’s ‘Violent revolution’, 2005’s ‘Enemy of god’ and their recent effort ‘Hordes of chaos’ has seen the German group return to their glory days.

Thrash continues to go from strength to strength, but will it suffer through the britpop and indie era of a 90’s revival?

Alice in Chains is well known for grunge.  Alice in Chains Dirt was the name of their second studio album.  Here is more about both the group and the album.

Alice in Chains Dirt came some time after the group was created.  They began in Seattle, Washington in 1987.  The group played grunge with elements of heavy metal.  They rose to fame in the early 1990s with the grunge movement.  They sold over 14 million albums in the US in the 1990s.  They made it to number one in the Billboard 200 on two occasions.  They also made 11 top selling singles.  In addition, there were six Grammy nominations.

Before Alice in Chains Dirt they completed a lot of work.  They signed with Columbia records in 1989 and became a top priority for that label.  After an early success with their first release in 1990 Columbia rushed their first album into production.  It was called facelift and it came out on August 21, 1990.  It made it to number 42 when the Billboard 200.  It sold only 40,000 copies in its first six months.  After MTV featured a single from the album, it took only six weeks to sell 400,000 copies.  It was a huge success.

Drug abuse and depression is featured heavily in Alice in Chains Dirt.  That’s because one of the band members were heavily addicted to many drugs.  He had just exited rehab.  He immediately returned to heroin use.  The band claims they were using marijuana while recording

Alice in Chains Dirt came into being while the band was on a tour.  That’s not easy to accomplish.  The resulting album was depressing.  The band members say they would expel their demons while performing.

The album cover for Alice in Chains Dirt was developed by one of the band members.  His girlfriend was featured.  Everyone liked it.  The album was completed in June of 1992.  It reached as high as six on the Billboard top 200.  The album made the group quite famous.  The album was certified gold in the UK and platinum in Canada and the US.

Aerosmith Dream On is a first single for the group.  It was featured on their 1973 debut album, Aerosmith.  Steven Tyler wrote the song with a lot of influence from the blues.

Aerosmith Dream On was their first big hit.  It made it to 59 as a single.  The re release made it to six in 1976.  The first live performance of this song took place at a tiny inn.  Aerosmith Dream On later became part of a number of compilations and boxed sets.

Aerosmith Dream On can be heard in video games.  It was used in the opening of Dead or Alive Ultimate.  Aerosmith even has their own game – Guitar Hero Aerosmith.  The game features a brand new recording.  Guitar Hero III also featured the song as a download.   Its appearance in that game was to promote the new game.

Not only has Aerosmith Dream On been featured in many live concerts, but but it has also been performed with full orchestras.  It was featured like this for MTVs 10th anniversary show.  In 2006 Aerosmith joined Boston Pops to perform the song.  They have sometimes dedicated the song to deceased fans or fallen soldiers.

Any search online will bring up a multitude of subliminal songs. i.e. songs with subliminal suggestions in them.

You can find anything; ranging from classics like Led Zeppelin stairway to heaven hidden messages to the modern era with artists such as Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Justin Timberlake using subliminal encoding.

There is quite a strong debate whether artists intentionally put subliminal messages in their music or not. Most musicians straight out deny using them. However after listening to some of these songs in reverse there are some really obvious subliminal messages which which are audible. Messages which are just clear to be just a coincidence.

The craze for recording / finding subliminal messages in songs started way back in 1967 with the release of Led Zeppelins track “Stairway to Heaven” Within this video there were alleged to be subliminal messages around the chorus section where the line starts “so there's a bushell in your hedgerow”. People played the track backwards to reveal a suggestion of “Here's to my Sweet Satan”. This caused public outcry, and condemnation from the church – of course Led Zep denied everything.

But the denial was irrelevant, phenomenon of subliminal backmasking in songs was created!

People started looking for messages, while more artists started putting them in their music. Subliminals have since been found in:

Britney Spears – telling people “sleep with me I’m not too young” in her first single.

Nirvana – saying “I hate you” in Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Tupac – claiming to be still alive.

Lady Gaga – telling people to “have sex” in her first single “just dance”.

It was on their fifth album and lead track, that the classic Queen Bohemian Rhapsody appeared. This song was like no other at the time and the single alone spent a full nine weeks in the UK singles chart. The album was of course ‘A Night At The Opera’. The songsvideo,which featured the band members, must have helped things along.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” was written by Freddie Mercury alone. Unusually, it was written on a telephone book in blocks. Each day he would add a new part to the composure. All the other parts like bass, guitar and drums, were thought up by Freddie as he went along. The rest of the band refereed to it as Freddie’s thing. Having now idea how the song would turn out, the other members of the band recorded their various parts as directed by Freddie. During composure,What started out as a small interlude,”Galileos”, became the famous operatic feature of the entire song. This intertwined with the hard rock and ballad parts of the song during the final mix.

A Queen Songs revival!

During the the making of “Wayne’s World 2″ in 1992, this track was used while the crew were going down town in the ‘Murph Mobile’. Parts of the original video were in the film, while the boys sang along, doing their stuff in the car. It was a bit of a blast from the past and not quite in tune with the film but what a way to wake the fans up!

The title for the song came towards the end of the recording session. “Queen Bohemian Rhapsody” now regarded as one the all time great songs in popular music. Of course the band had other outstanding tracks and songs in the history of their long and colorful career. Radio Ga Ga,We will rock you, Love of My life and many others too.
